PNG to GIF converter on your device

Choose, drop or paste one static PNG. Preview the converted GIF before downloading. Original pixel dimensions and aspect ratio stay unchanged. One PNG produces one still GIF frame, not an animation. Files are processed in your browser and are not uploaded. No login, registration, watermark or saved history.

What happens to colors and transparency?

GIF supports a palette of at most 256 colors. This tool reuses our local GIF writer with a fixed 216-color RGB palette, six levels per channel. Colors are quantized and may visibly change. One additional palette index represents full transparency. Fully transparent pixels stay transparent. Partially transparent pixels are composited onto white before quantization; smooth alpha edges cannot be preserved.

For each channel, the writer calculates source × alpha + 255 × (1 − alpha), then rounds to the nearest palette level (a multiple of 51). This is a calculated mapping, not a promise of visually identical output. No dithering is applied. PNG color profiles, metadata and comments are not copied. Browser decoding can affect color interpretation. This is not lossless conversion and does not promise a smaller file.

Supported files and limits

One static PNG is supported, including browser-decodable grayscale, RGB and palette PNGs with transparency. Animated PNG (APNG) is rejected instead of silently flattening its animation. JPG, WebP, URL imports, cloud imports and multiple-file batches are not supported on this page.

PNG and GIF ImageDecoder, workers and OffscreenCanvas must be available. Unsupported browsers show an error. There is no fixed input-byte limit; usable size depends on browser memory. A safety limit of 4,096 pixels per side applies, and processing stops after two minutes. Invalid or truncated files produce no download.

The generated GIF is parsed and decoded again before download becomes available: dimensions, one frame, zero stored delay and absence of a loop extension must match. Independent downloaded-file checks for the public sample are recorded below.

The downloaded GIF was independently opened with Pillow: GIF format, palette color mode P, one frame, 100 × 100 pixels, zero stored delay and no loop extension. This sample has no fully transparent pixels, so this run does not establish full-transparency retention. The color and alpha mapping described above is the writer's implementation, not a lossless claim.

Frequently asked questions

Will my PNG become animated?

No. A single static PNG becomes a single static GIF frame. This page does not combine images into an animation.

Is this PNG to GIF converter lossless?

No. The palette reduces color precision and partial transparency is flattened onto white. Fully transparent pixels remain transparent.

Will the GIF be smaller?

Not necessarily. Compare the actual output bytes before downloading.

Can I convert other formats?
