What stays in an animated GIF?

GIF input is cropped by the existing gifsicle WebAssembly engine in a browser worker. This operation does not request frame removal, speed changes, loop changes, color reduction or lossy compression. Frame order, individual frame delays and loop settings are retained by the crop operation. The same crop area is applied to the entire animation.

Supported files and browser limits

This version accepts GIF, JPG, PNG, WebP and APNG, and downloads GIF. Animated PNG and WebP require a browser with ImageDecoder support for that format; unsupported animated files are rejected rather than flattened. Other image formats and cloud imports are not supported.

Local files are never uploaded. There is no fixed file-byte cap in this tool, but memory, image dimensions and available resources on your device limit what it can process. Large animations can fail or make your browser slow. Worker processing stops after a two-minute safety timeout. Try a smaller source if processing fails.

What can change?

Cropping removes pixels outside the selected rectangle. It can cut off a subject that moves later in the animation, so check the full loop. GIF input uses its existing palette. APNG and WebP frames are decoded locally and converted to GIF; their timing is rounded to GIF’s centisecond precision. JPG, PNG, APNG and WebP are converted to a 256-entry GIF palette with binary transparency; colors and soft transparent edges can change. A cropped result is not guaranteed to have fewer bytes.

How do I make the cropped GIF smaller?
